Self Portrait by Michael Fortier
It is with great pleasure that we announce the ArtisTTable’s 25th exhibition - SELFIE. While we have held a portrait show and a couple of figurative exhibitions we have never presented an offering featuring the self portrait. Of course self portraits have been a mainstay of the art world since the beginning of image making. Self examination in this way is a fascinating study, and with the flood of selfies that barrage us everyday on social media, we just had to see what would happen with this call for art.
This is an all media show with the only stipulation being that the work must represent the artist's self. As you wander through this show you will see the theme interpreted in traditional ways and some ways that might make you wonder. Take the time to read the artist's statements that you will find by clicking on the artist's name that is under every piece of art in the show. We might add that this is the first show in which First Place was won with the submission of a video.
We want to thank Phil Gubert for serving as our juror for this exhibition. We know what it takes to review all the art and then make those difficult decisions that juror's need to make. We truly respect and appreciate Phil's work in our behalf.
Juror's Statement:
The most personal work is often self reflective. What I love about self-portraits are their ability to capture the now within an artist's mind. I think exploring yourself - specifically your body - pushes any artist to let down boundaries and be vulnerable. "Selfies" are an everyday, often exploitative experience now. Making something personal and real is more difficult and I believe these three selections explore and achieve just that.
Elinora Schwartz's short film broke my heart, Wayne Higgs using his body as a muse is an inspiration, and Ravit Haviv's expression captivated me. These three, while all different, tell a story about the artist and the emotions they are experiencing.
Thank you for allowing me to view and experience all submitted work.
