Whirlpool by Zohar Roth

We could not think of a better way to end 2017 and start off 2018 that to have an all media show titled Anything Goes! We are proud to present to you the ArtisTTable’s 27th exhibition - Anything Goes. The world has become a funnier place than it has been in recent history, and we don't necessarily mean funny Ha-Ha. It seems that more and more there are arguments where someone saying light is dark and someone else is arguing back that dark is light. Anything seems to be happening all around us. It might be a good idea to keep you seat belts fastened and seats in the upright with tray tables in the locked position, it could be a bumpy flight.

Anything Goes is an all media show with a completely open theme. Basically there were no constraints to speak of. We are happy to present this show and really wish to express our thanks to all those that participated.

Juror's Results and Comments:

We want to thank Norman "Denny" Kline for serving as our juror for this exhibition. We appreciate his time and work in this effort to review this body of submissions. We invited Denny to jury this show because not only is he an artist himself, but he seems to have lived his life in an anything goes manner. His list of careers is lengthy as it includes: Musician, chef, artist, carpenter, boat-yardman, custom car painter, lion tamer, airship designer, hut builder, horse groomer, and art bon vivant.

Being invited to be the juror of this show was an honor that proved to be more difficult than I had expected. It called into question every aspect and idiom of art and culture as I know it.

As the show title, Anything Goes exudes, there are so many ideas out there and so many ways to express them. I really enjoyed the opportunity to pour over this impressive body of submitted work. After looking intently at each and every entry, when it came to deciding the awards, I felt that when push came to shove that I should push convention aside and just go with with the pieces that moved me the most on the gut level.

Thanks for the chance to curate this show. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

– Norman "Denny" Kline.

First Place:

-Karen Naim - Arambol Beach Girl

Arambol Beach Girl is a painting that just grabbed me with emotion as soon as I laid eyes on it and it hasn't let go of me sense. There is a genuine feeling of freedom that would have a children cutting loose on the beach.

Second Place:

-Tomer Duwek - Safta Liza

There is no doubt that Tomer has some serious painting skills that are shown off very well in this painting, Safta Liza. The attention to detail in every part of the painting is exquisite, from the balance of warm and cool colors to the texture of her blouse to the careful touch that he gave to each of the creases of her skin.

Third Place:

-Amir Gunman - Prague (Red Roofs)

This is a striking image to be sure. There is a graphic aspect to this painting that is so strong as the red roofs angle their way throughout the composition giving structure and an added sense of receding space it what is a flattened view of Prague. The texture used on the buildings also communicates the gritty nature of a big city that has stood the test of time.

Honorable Mentions:

The following artists have submitted work that is worthy of praise and recognition.

-Mary Jo Roys Drueke - Dylan

Impressed by the way this pastel painting of this scene transports each of us to this specific live Bob Dylan performance.

-Nancy Turner - Portrait of a Sailor

This was an automatic choice. From his "Mona Lisa" smile to title,

Portrait of a Sailor, just in case there was any question as to the subject of this painting.

-Donna Ann Bisbee - Radiant Bloom

This is a beautifully expressive painting.

-Jackie Rogers - The Honeymoon

The luminosity of this On Golden Pond moment in green is worthy of recognition.

-Marlen Ismalon - Sunrise, Sunset

There is so much to love about this painting that poses way more questions than it answers. I like how it turns the table on us in that way.

-Netta Ganor - Fisherman's Boat

I am as excited about the translucency of the water as I am at the way the distant land form calls for me to dive in and swim over to it and explore. Netta has some mad painting skills, and if that were not enough, be sure to read her Artist Statement for more insights to this amazing artist.

-Paul Pinzarrone - Floater Red

This is truly psychedelic. Anyone has to appreciate that! Intense colors, and a composition that swallows the woman into its oblivion as much as it puts her on a pedestal.

-Hagit Buchwalter - Japanese Woman on a Pillow

I like to see unusual and unexpected materials used, and this is a good example of that. The wire mesh is manipulated expertly to define the forms of the figure.

-Shai Hamaydes - Corridor

The ordinariness of this scene is as intoxicating as it the urge I have to run out of that door and fly away over the city.

Staff Choice Awards:

Tali's Choice:

-Allissa Thoreson - Kiss

The appealing composition, strong shapes, attractive colors and lots of layers that shine through make this painting the show's “Tali Choice."

Royce's Choice:

-Shena Sloboda - Something Ether

Maybe it is my midwest sensibilities but I love the sense of hope this painting by Shena Sloboda offers. Living in Michigan, winter seriously proposes four or five months of gray cloudy skies. This painting presents the hope that there might be a sunny day in store.

Congratulations to Anat Bodasher for winning the People's Choice Award for his painting, Bezalel Yafe Melchett Street - Tel Aviv. The Sketchbook Show can be seen in our archives.
